Our Financial Planning Designations

At VIP Wealth Advisors, we take pride in offering comprehensive financial planning services backed by industry-leading certifications and expertise. When choosing a financial planner, it’s essential to understand the designations behind their name, as they reflect specialized training, experience, and ethical standards. Here, we’ll explain the financial planner designations held by our team and how they set us apart in providing top-tier services to our clients.
Certified Financial Planner (CFP®)
The CFP® designation is widely recognized as the gold standard in personal financial planning. It is awarded by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards to professionals who meet its strict standards for education, examination, experience, and ethics.
To hold the CFP® marks, one must:
- Possess at least a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
- Complete a CFP Board–approved curriculum covering over 70 areas across retirement planning, investments, estate planning, tax strategy, insurance, behavioral finance, and more, including a capstone case study demonstrating integrated planning.
- Pass a comprehensive national exam that tests the ability to apply advanced financial concepts in real-world planning scenarios.
- Accumulate thousands of hours (3+ Years) of qualifying professional experience.
- Commit to a fiduciary duty, always placing the client’s best interests first, and upholding the CFP Board’s Code of Ethics and Standards of Conduct.
- Complete at least 30 hours of continuing education every two years, including coursework in ethics and regulatory updates.
The CFP® designation signals the highest level of competence and accountability in financial planning—and ensures advice is not only sound but always in your best interest.
Enrolled Agent (EA) status is the highest credential awarded by the Internal Revenue Service. It grants unlimited rights to represent taxpayers before the IRS in all 50 states, covering audits, appeals, collections, and tax court proceedings (with attorney sponsorship).
The EA credential is earned by:
- Passing a three-part federal exam covering individual taxation, business taxation, and IRS representation procedures—or qualifying through extensive IRS experience.
- Complying with the ethical standards outlined in Treasury Department Circular 230.
- Completing 72 hours of IRS-approved continuing education every three years, ensuring full fluency in the evolving federal tax code.
Unlike many financial advisors who outsource tax guidance, an Enrolled Agent delivers in-house expertise on complex tax strategy—providing comprehensive, integrated planning across investment and tax disciplines.
Equity Compensation Associate (ECA)
The Equity Compensation Associate (ECA) designation is awarded by the Certified Equity Professional Institute (CEPI) at Santa Clara University. It is the first formal credential in the Certified Equity Professional (CEP) track, demonstrating foundational expertise in stock-based compensation.
The designation reflects proficiency in:
- Equity plan design, taxation, and administration across a wide range of instruments, including ISOs, NSOs, RSUs, ESPPs, and performance shares.
- Key areas such as accounting, securities law, global equity trends, and corporate governance.
- Passing a national exam focused on real-world knowledge of equity compensation programs.
Maintaining the ECA credential requires 30 hours of continuing education every two years, ensuring that practitioners stay current and forward-thinking in strategies for clients with complex equity compensation.
Chartered Retirement Plans Specialist (CRPS®)
The CRPS® designation, granted by the College for Financial Planning, focuses exclusively on the design, implementation, and management of employer-sponsored retirement plans. It’s a specialized credential for advisors serving business owners, founders, and plan sponsors.
Areas of expertise include:
- Designing qualified plans such as 401(k)s, Profit Sharing Plans, SEP IRAs, Solo 401(k)s, and Safe Harbor plans.
- Navigating fiduciary obligations, ERISA compliance, and tax efficiency for plan sponsors and participants.
- Advising on plan suitability, maintenance, and optimization in coordination with business and personal financial goals.
The designation is maintained through adherence to ethical standards and 16 hours of continuing education every two years.
DACFP Advanced Certificate in Blockchain and Digital Assets: Crypto Professional Track
Issued by Digital Assets Council of Financial Professionals. This is the only certificate program designed specifically for those working in the crypto industry. Graduates who earn their Advanced Certificate gain a deep level of knowledge and understanding about blockchain and digital assets.
